The Importance of Righteous Living

April 28, 2012

After we receive salvation, we still have to live in a world that is full of lust, self-indulgence, pleasure, disobedience, hatred, and false teachings and it can be difficult to decipher between what is acceptable or not. How should we navigate? Some say this and others say that, but what does the Bible say? Is God's word only for the days of old or former years or is it still applicable and relevant in today's society? You be the judge. Are the righteous suppose to be different from the world/unrighteous? God has always made a difference between clean and unclean, holy and unholy. Being distinct from the world is not a suggestion but a requirement. In our daily lives, we are required to do that which is right and live righteously.

According to the King James Bible (n.a.), the word righteous translated from the Hebrew means just, lawful, right or correct in conduct and character. God's word outlines how we must conduct ourselves as examples or disciples of Jesus Christ. According to Proverbs 12:5, the thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit. "A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame" (Proverbs 13:5). In 1 John 3:7 it says, "Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as HE is righteous." Also, Luke 1:6 says: "And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless." It is possible to be righteous even in today's generation. However, anything opposite of righteousness is unrighteousness which is being worldly or sensual in nature. Therefore, there is a clear distinction between the two.

Analyzing the biblical texts, it clearly outlines the differences between the behavior of the righteous and the unrighteous. Based on the reference, one will lie and another won't. Also, one will think wholesome thoughts and others deceitful thoughts. Luke makes an excellent point in stating that true righteousness is walking in obedience to the commandments and ordinances of God. According to the scripture, that person is blameless or perfect. That is correct; we can be perfect in this generation This can ONLY be done through and by God. To achieve the state of perfection/righteousness, we must submit ourselves wholly to God and have a mind to do HIS will. Praying and fasting is also a must. Also, reading and studying the Bible is another way to stay focus because it will provide the guidelines and instructions to follow to maintain good standing with God. We will make mistakes on this journey. However, we can't afford to let it hinder us. If we find ourselves not upholding the standards of God, we should repent (stop/turn), learn from it, and keep striving to please him. Trust me when I say he is faithful to forgive, restore, and assist you. NO more adhering to this world's philosophy and teaching regarding the state of man. It isn't pleasing to the Father. Every believer should have a goal to live righteously. Righteous living is the objective.
